KOCHI: Jithin John Octave is a perfect archetype of the present day youth, who has the drive to pursue his long-cherished dream. This self taught musician was the first prize winner of ‘solo western music’ for MG University youth festival 2012. He is also one of the youngest members of ‘Rock of Ages’, the city-based choral singing group which has been part of Kochi’s music scene since the last six years. He is also the lead singer and lyricist of ‘Trespassers’ band based in St Albert’s college. When it comes to music, this otherwise reticent youngster is enthusiastic. He says, “My mother who used to sing well is my inspiration. I have been singing songs from a very young age for our church choral group. I joined some months back in ‘Rock of Ages’. Till then I was not aware of the dynamics of music.” He confesses that English songs have had a huge influence on him. “Initially I looked down upon Malayalam songs. Rock of Ages changed my perception of music,” he says.Jithin is not unaware of the negative trappings associated with rock bands, and believes that young musicians must be careful about the example they set.  “Teenagers who are part of metal bands consider it is cool to consume drugs and alcohol. One should never use music as an instrument to practise anti-social activities, since we tend to influence many," he says.“Our music band, ‘Trespassers’ has a policy not to use drugs or alcohol since we know we are influencing many. We concentrate more on other aspects like lyrics, music and composition. We can in fact use music for a purpose. Our music band is on the forefront of  many social issues.”‘Trespassers’ which has presented their shows in different parts of the city has Jithin and Jose Gonsalo as the lyricists. Music composition is by another student, Mark James. Aravind Warrier is the drummer. Shine Jose is the keyboardist. Guitar is played by Godson and Aisten.“Many people follow our music. We are there for a cause and we aspire to expand our horizons in the near future,” says Jithin.
