BANGALORE: The residents of Herohalli ward under the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) are spending not anything less than `3,000 once in every three to four months to empty their sanitary pits. It is surprising that most of the areas in the ward do not have sanitary lines. They are still following the age-old tradition of sanitary pits and are spending thousands of rupees on a regular basis to empty it.When City Express visited the ward, most of the residents complained of the same problem. The residents said that no action has been taken in this regard by the ward corporator A M Hanumanthegowda. “In case of the newly built houses, the sanitary pit gets filled only after a year. But sanitary pits of the houses which are old gets filled in just three months. We are spending about `3,000-5,000 just to empty it. The developmental works are getting delayed and sanitary lines could have been established by this time,” said Rangaswamy, a retired police officer. When we visited the ward the works of laying the Cauvery pipes were in progress. We also found that the Herohalli lake did not contain a single drop of water. “Owing to this, the ground water levels in the ward has dropped badly. Most of the bore wells in and around the ward have gone dry,” said S Rangappa, a conductor with BMTC.As the lake is dry now, works relating to developing the lake like de-silting can be undertaken in the summer season along with laying a walking track for us, said the residents. They further urged the storm water drain work to be carried out at the earliest in Anjananagar, next to the Herohalli Lake. Some residents also complained that a 15-feet road named ‘Nakashe Road’, which connects the residents of Madeswaranagar Pipeline Road to Herohalli was encroached by some influential political leaders. They alleged that the 15- feet road was allotted in the blueprint, but it remains encroached. When City Express tried to contact the Herohalli corporator M Hanumanthegowda was unvailable for any comments.
