For the fourth consecutive year, a tribute to singer D K Pattammal, was held in the city on Saturday. Organised by GLV Miracle, lyricist Vairamuthu presided over the tribute and recalled many of the late singers’ biggest musical achievements.
He released the audio CD Tamilin Kural, which includes some of the best works of Pattammal. The CD includes 12 compositions of popular poets such as Papanasam Sivan, Subramania Bharathiyar and Periyasamy Thuran.
“Pattammal didn’t know how revered she was in the music world. She lived solely to take music to everyone without any discrimination. She even sang to oblige a washerwoman,” said Vairamuthu. “Bharathiyar’s songs were usually read only by educated people. Pattammal was the one who brought those lines to a larger section of people.
She sang those songs with the same emotions that drove Bharathiyar while he wrote the songs. She always understood the meaning of the songs and through her singing, also helped the listeners understand the song,” the poet added.
Pattammal was a legendary Carnatic musician and playback singer. DKP, as she was fondly referred to by her fans, was part of the music trio that also included M S Subbulakshmi and M L Vasanthakumari.
The occasion was followed by a musical tribute to Pattammal by her disciple Bhanumathy Vishwanath.
