THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A determined mind topped with enthusiasm can raise even ‘Cleopatra’s City’ again! Can’t believe? But eyes won’t lie. Everyone who stepped into room number 18 of the Govt Model HS LPS & Nursery at Thycaud School might have stood wonder-struck for a moment as the tenth standard students of Carmel Girls Higher Secondary School, Namitha Pramod and Arya Ajith, had recreated the  city which submerged into the depths of the Mediterranean 1600 years ago.The model was on display at the Social Science Work Experience Exhibition-2011 of schools under the Thiruvananthapuram South Education Sub-district. With all ingenuity, the royal quarters of Cleopatra that many have learned or heard about were enriched with all significant landmarks with absolute precision. The aqueducts, that channeled fresh water from the mainland to the island, the pyramid of Giza, Mark Antony’s dwelling, the race course, where the royal family conducted the horse racing, and the lighthouse which played a significant part in the trade relations of the country, were recreated by absorbing all the finest details. With the help of LED lights, the submerged portions of the city were lit up.“A research work done for months and ten days of hard work helped us make a model of the city a reality. The support of teachers and school authorities was tremendous,’’ Namitha said.Students have also created many still models that convey socially relevant issues that seek urgent attention.Thasneema Shajahan and Nivedita S N of Manacaud Vocational Higher Secondary School upheld the message of curbing the garbage menace and utilisation of garbage in a profitable way. They made a model of a biogas plant and depicted the subsequent utilisation of the residues, after it is converted to manure for plants.Though global warming has turned a much-discussed issue, the thermocol model of the maps of India made by the students of Cordova School was more than enough to convey the results of the universal issue. While one map was that of the India at present, the other was that of an imaginary India where the 28 states have almost glued to each other where the major water bodies have disappeared due to increase in atmospheric temperature.Adarsh S and Suban Sasikumar of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Vazhuthacaud, made the model of the Wassercraft Yolk AG, the first manmade dam in the world, in Jordan. Model of PSLV C-11, repercussions of oil price fluctuations, solar system and high-tech city were presented by the students through various models. The section on collections had a wide array of coins from various countries like the USA, England, UAE, Singapore, Kuwait, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and France. Postal stamps and spices too found a place in the collection. The mela concluded on Friday.
