CHENNAI: DMDK founder and TN Assembly Opposition leader Vijayakant on Saturday called on Governor K Rosaiah to press the Union government to implement the apex court ruling in 2006 to increase water level in Mullaiperiyar dam from 136 ft to 142 ft.Vijayakant and his party MLAs submitted memorandum to this effect and urged the Governor to bring the issue to the notice of the Union Government. He called on unity among all the political parties in dam row considering the welfare of people of TN.“We have requested the Governor to express our stand to the Central Government,” he told reporters here.Supreme Court had already passed its verdict after considering all the aspects of reservoir to increase the storage level and the order needs to be implemented, he said.“We don’t have to hold talks on Mullaiperiyar issue as the matter was already disposed off by the apex court. And we have enough experience of losing through talks as in the case of Cauvery. Therefore, the only solution for the problem is to implement the verdict regarding the storage level”, he observed. He also sought intervention of the Governor to ensure the security of Tamil Nadu fishermen as they are prone to attacks by Sri Lankan navy. The fishermen are being deprived of their livelihood rights due to the agreements entered between India and Sri Lanka in 1974 and 1976, he pointed out. “We welcome the move of the Central Government to earmark `1,300 crore to build as many as 49,000 houses for the Lankan Tamils affected in the war”, he added.Replying to the future functioning of DMDK in the Assembly, Vijayakant said that he will never take “double stand” like DMK chief M Karunanidhi.“We stick to our same stand unlike Karunanidhi as his party took two different stands in the increase in FDI, one in Chennai and another in Delhi,” Vijayakant said.
