HUBLI: The Department of PU Education can boast that it has achieved the highest pass percentage compared to the last nine years, but it should be noted that the leakage of question papers has affected this year’s results.Going by the subject-wise results, it is seen that most of the students failed in the mathematics paper, which was the first to be cancelled due to the leakage issue. It was postponed from March 20 to April 3.“Most of my friends were disturbed by the incident and now they have failed in the paper,” said G M Basavaraj, who had attended the examination at a centre in Gadag. Appearing again on the rescheduled date was a big headache, he recalled.Renuka Sajjan, who scored 78 per cent, said that the leakage of question papers led to her securing the lowest (62) marks in Mathematics, whereas she was confident of scoring over 85 per cent.Surprisingly, questions of the physics paper were also leaked but students passed with 82.44 per cent, which is higher than Mathematics (73.65 per cent) and Chemistry (77.88 per cent). Biology registered the highest score of passing with 84.03 per cent.Tirlapur, a retired mathematics lecturer, analysing the result says that as it was the second incident of leakage, students were mentally prepared and managed to do well up to some extent. He added that only the passing ratio cannot correct the error as it should be noted that physics paper saw the second lowest marks after mathematics in terms of individual marks.However, department officials denied the allegation and point out that external students achieved only 25.01 per cent in the passing ratio. Actually 69.59 per cent of regular students passed, but the poor performance of external candidates pulled down the results to 57.03 per cent. The irony is that Mathematics and Physics are the highest in which a number of students scored 100 per cent with the figures being 372 in physics, 241 in mathematics, 87 in Chemistry and 17 in Biology.
