Farmers in the delta region backed by Tamil nationalist outfits are gearing up for a rail roko agitation to counter the protests in Karnataka against release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu and sustain the pressure on the Centre to ensure the release of Tamil Nadu’s share.
The decision to block trains were taken at a joint meeting of farmers and Tamil outfits in the delta region.
Announcing the decision, P Maniarasan, general secretary of the Tamil Desa Podhuvudamai Katchi, a Leftist outfit, said that farmers in Karnataka had already harvested their crops and wre preparaing for the next c rop in January. But, farmers in TN are unable to raise crops since Karnataka had denied water.
At Nagapattinam, Arupathy Kalyanam, general secretary of the Federation of Farmers Associations of Cauvery Delta Districts, pointed out that the Karnataka Government should have actually released 2-tmcft of water everyday for 24 days, as the State should have been provided 48-tmcft of water till September 15 this year, as per the tribunal orders with regard to distress sharing formula.
