Protestors wave Pakistan & LeT flags in Srinagar, clash with police

Srinagar: Kashmir Valley on Friday once again witnessed a group of people waving flags of Pakistan and terror group Lashkar-e-Toiba. The protesters clashed with Jammu and Kashmir Police which burst teargas shells to disperse the mob.

The protests broke out in the Nowhatta area of Srinagar soon after Friday prayers. The protestors also pelted stones at the police who were deployed in strength outside the Jamia mosque.

On Thursday, Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was put under house arrest to prevent him from taking out a rally to commemorate the death anniversary of his father Moulvi Mohammad Farooq, who was assassinated on May 21, 1990.

The moderate Hurriyat Conference had planned a rally at Eidgah to pay tributes to Mirwaiz's father and another Hurriyat leader Abdul Gani Lone. Terrorists had shot dea Lone on May 21, 2002 during a commemoration rally for Moulvi Mohammad Farooq.

Raising of Pakistani flags is not uncommon in downtown Srinagar which is one of the strongholds of Kashmiri separatists leaders.

Recently Kashmiri separatist Masarat Alam was arrested following outrage over raising of pro-Pakistan slogans and flags at a rally attended by him. The 45-year-old hardliner was arrested from his home in Habbakadal area of Srinagar.

Masarat was himself seen chanting slogans in support of Pakistan while welcoming Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
