The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by CPM was marked by the widespread violence in the district. A CPM supporter, Shanmukham, 44, of Chenakkalpadam in Anchumoorthymangalam of Vadakkencherry collapsed and died while he was taking part in a protest demonstration. Vehicles were blocked by CPM supporters in many parts of the district.

On the national highway vehicles were blocked at Pudussery, Kuzhalmannam, Alathur and Vadakkencherry by the CPM and DYFI activists. In Alathur, the road was blockaded.

Violence in Thrissur

Sporadic incidents of violence marked the hartal in the Thrissur district .

Shops and business establishments, except medical shops,remained closed in the city and downtown areas. The dawn-to-dusk hartal threw the public transport system out of gear. Though the KSRTC initially operated a skeletal service, all services were withdrawn later. Most of the private vehicles also kept off the road.
