Probe begins into plaints of excess college fee

COIMBATORE: The State government-constituted complaint cell, headed by Prof V Jayabalan, to probe collection of excess tuition and capitation fee in professional colleges in Tamil Nadu has begun acting on petitions received from various districts.An inspection team went to the Sri Muthukumaran Institute of Technology in suburban Chennai on Wednesday following media reports that the students of the college had gone on a strike opposing an increase in the transport fee.However, the panel members could not meet the students, as the college had declared a holiday in view of the student unrest. College authorities, however, told the panel that the students were merely protesting management decision to hold special classes on Saturdays.Jayabalan told Express, the committee has so far received complaints against 10 professional colleges, including those in Chennai and the western districts.
