TIRUNELVELI: Even as the national committee of scientists and experts held its first meeting with State panel on Tuesday to hammer out a solution to the Koodankulam impasse, the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) submitted a memorandum asking for a complete halt of works at the nuclear plant.During the meeting held at the Tirunelveli District Collectorate from 11 am to 1 pm, PMANE presented a memorandum to the national committee seeking answers as well as documentations on eight topics and urged the Government of India and the Department of Atomic Energy to stop all works at the nuclear power plant completely. It also demanded a white paper on the project. The next round of talks will be held shortly, though a definite date was not set.PMANE also sought copies of the Environmental Impact Assessment report, the Site Evaluation Study, Safety Analysis Report, VVER (nuclear reactor) Performance Report and all the relevant documents for reactors 1 and 2 along with a copy of the Inter-Government Agreement on the issue of liability signed between Russia and India in 2008.The group said it sought the documents in order to be prepared and to initiate meaningful dialogue with Central and State teams.The group also urged the government in its memorandum to probe 50 issues, including as the siting (location) of reactors 1 and 2, Coastal Regulation Zone violations, if any, and the public hearing process, and prepare position papers on the issues. These papers are to be translated to Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi and disseminated widely throughout Tamil Nadu, Kerala and other states to facilitate popular discussions and expert debates. The group also urged the national committee to meet people living in a 30-km radius of the plant, and to hold talks with an expert team formed by PMANE.
