Pipili gangrape: Police arrest second accused
The first arrest in the case happened on Sunday. CM Naveen Patnaik has ordered a judicial probe into the incident.

Bhubaneshwar: The crime branch of Odisha police has arrested a second accused in the horrific Pipili gangrape case. Purnachandra Swain was arrested by the Odisha police on Monday morning. So far two of the four accused have been arrested, while the other two are absconding.

On Sunday, the prime accused Prashant Pradhan was arrested from Jatni railway station near Bhubaneswar by the crime branch.

The crime branch will produce the two arrested in the Pipili court on Monday.

The crime branch has also been directed by the Odisha High Court to give its status report on the case by Monday.

Meanwhile, the victim, who is in coma and battling for her life in the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, has been recommended by a team of specialist doctors to be shifted to New Delhi’s AIIMS for better treatment. However, the state government is yet to initiate action in this regard.

On November 28 last year, four youths at Pipili in Puri district of Odisha allegedly gangraped and strangled the 19-year-old Dalit girl, leading the victim to go into coma.

A judicial inquiry was ordered into the case by Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik after much public pressure and protests by the Opposition.
