KANNUR: The Kannur lobby in the CPM has once again asserted its dominance over the party as its state conference came to a close in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday evening. Pinarayi Vijayan, who is continuing his innings consecutively for the fourteenth year as state secretary of the most powerful left political outfit in Kerala, has virtually surpassed the records of all communist leaders right from P C Joshi to Surjith Singh.Of course, Stalin maintained a record of 29 years from 1924 to 53. But that was in Soviet Russia which remains no more a Soviet today. Political observers point out that continuance of a man as a party leader for so long is against even the trends in communist countries.Even the Chinese Communist Party has fixed only two terms for its leader. Of course there was Mao, but it was part of a bygone era. But the Kerala communists seem to be a different lot. They are prepared to swim against the communist tide all over the world if the outcome of the CPM state conference is any indication. Born in a family of toddy tappers on March 21 in 1944 at Pinarayi, Vijayan had a troubled childhood.Campus politics seemed to be his domain and Brennen College turned out to be a fertile ground for Pinarayi Vijayan, the would-be communist leader. Vijayan always needed a foe even in his own party to grow.Said Berlin Kunhanandan Nair, a veteran communist ousted from the CPM for alleged anti-party activities who has been watching the growth of the communist movement in India for more than seven decades: “The prevailing trend in the CPM would bring about its own downfall”.Whatever the political opponents or factional foes in his party have to say, the re-emergence of Pinarayi Vijayan, who has a typical proletarian political background, as the state secretary of the CPM marks the beginning of another chapter in political history.
