VELLORE: Ration cards and income certificates can be used to get free medical treatment under the new insurance scheme until fresh smart cards are issued, said health minister Dr Vijay. Speaking at a function organised to inaugurate chief minister’s new medical insurance scheme on Saturday, the minister said that the scheme has been modified to benefit people of all age groups. Steps have been taken to issue new smart cards to all the 1.34 crore beneficiaries within two months, he said.Assuring people that those who had not applied for new cards need not panic, the minister said such persons can use an income certificate from revenue department (stating that the annual income is Rs 72,000 or less) along with ration cards to be able to seek medical assistance at designated hospitals.Dr Vijay also sought the cooperation of private hospitals enrolled under the scheme to accept these documents until new cards are issued.
