TUMKUR: The acquittal of 19 accused in the February 10, 2005, massacre of police in Venkatammanahalli village of Pavagada taluk due to lack of evidence in the second additional district and sessions court here on Saturday has come as a slap to the police. The police had seized 110 used and 11 live bullets from the spot but did not send them to forensic science laboratory (FSL) — which ought to be examined by ballistic experts.Counsels for the accused took no time to highlight this lapse, and accused that the bullets were fired from the self loaded rifles (SLRs) of the police. “This saved innocent persons who were falsely implicated by police who could not arrest the real culprits,” said T G Rangaraju.Public prosecutor H T Bikkannanavar, while speaking to Express admitted to the lapse. He, however, claimed that they will contest the issue in the High Court.
