The Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Ambala have recovered two kilogram gold valued at approximately Rs 1.5 crore from a passenger and Rs 5 lakh cash from another, during a checking drive.
The Railway Police are conducting strict checks at stations and on trains. RPF officers at Ambala Cantonment Railway Station conducted a checking campaign on trains this week which resulted in significant recoveries.
RPF in-charge Javed Khan said that in light of the Haryana elections, the headquarters received orders to be vigilant as anti-social elements might attempt to cause trouble. This has been taken seriously and police have taken significant measures to address these problems.
Since borders are sealed ahead of elections, some criminals prefer to travel by train owing to ease of crossing state borders. Hence , a special team has been deployed to conduct thorough checks.
This team conducted a search in Coach B2 in a train that left Ludhiana. During their search, they recovered two kilograms of gold from a passenger named Gagandeep. When questioned, the accused was not able to produce the right documents for the gold. Following this, the RPF has informed the Income Tax who are taking further action.
Meanwhile, the RPF also recovered five lakh rupees in cash from another person in the same coach. Ahead of elections, a person cannot travel with more than Rs 2 lakh in cash. When the person was questioned about this, he could not give a satisfactory answer. A case has been registered by the RPF and further action is underway.
Both the passengers are residents of Amritsar and associated with jewelry and textile business.
