BANGALORE: ‘Wider roads equals de-congestion of traffic has been a skewed mantra of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahangara Palike (BBMP).Even though they have tried to manipulate their ways into widening roads, despite widespread protests, their decision to suspend engineers from the Major Roads Department has further delayed works undertaken in the city.Major Roads is the primary department which is entrusted with the controversial road widening project. But the recent suspension of these officials have left the commuters fuming on a congested Mysore Road, as delayed works are being delayed further. But the civic body says that adequate replacements have already been deployed. “Only 4-5 officials were suspended and replacements are already in place,” a senior Palike official said.Unwilling to admit that work has been stalled, he said that ‘land acquisition’ and Metro have delayed t h e project and not the suspension. The Palike have recently suspended many officials in various departments, but the delay in replacements and reinforcements have led to constant hurdles in projects that have already been delayed. With one of the highest density of traffic movement, Mysore road widening should have been their major priority, but the new officials have been scrambling with files of land acquisition and other problems, before work can resume. Added to this, there have been problems with the encroachment of the Muslim Burial ground which had also led to scuffles during the visit of the former Mayor S K Natraj. With the number of vehicles increasing by the minute on Mysore Road, the situation may be headed for worse. Added to this, the dug up sides of the road are now full with water and have caused many accidents and traffic movement to slow down in the area. With electric poles and uncovered man holes, this is a disaster waiting to happen, unless the BBMP can get their act together.
