New Delhi: Amidst the unabated ceasefire violations by Pakistan, India on Sunday summoned Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit. He was summoned to the External Affairs Ministry by Secretary-East Anil Wadhwa who conveyed India's strong protest over continued firing and shelling at the Line of Control and International Border in Jammu & Kashmir.
After the meeting, Basit said an effective mechanism was required to determine who is engaged in ceasefire violations. Six people have died and 16 others have been injured due to Pakistan's unprovoked firing and shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) with India in Jammu and Kashmir.
"Obviously, I conveyed to the Foreign Secretary that we are concerned about ceasefire violations. In the months of July and August there have been close to 70 ceasefire violations from this side of the LoC and the working boundary. We are obviously very concerned about it and secondly, our side would like to have a more effective mechanism in place as to determine who indulges in these unprovoked firing" Basit said.
Basit was summoned even as the two countries get ready for the first-ever NSA-level talks here on terrorism related issues next week.
National Security Advisors of India and Pakistan -- Ajit Doval and Sartaj Aziz -- will hold talks on terrorism-related issues for the first time on August 23.
During the talks, India is expected to present strong evidence of terrorism emanating from Pakistan highlighted further by recent attacks in Gurdaspur in Punjab and near Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir.
