KOCHI: K S Sanoj, a 14-year-old boy from Kannur has been selected for the 14th P V Thampy Memorial Endowment Award instituted by the Environment Monitoring Forum. The award, consisting of ` 10,000 and a plaque, is being given to the individuals who have contributed substantially towards the environmental protection.Sanoj, a student of the Government Welfare School at Cherukunnu, is the son of a Kannur fisherman Santhosh. Sanoj has been planting thousands of mangroves on the banks of Muttil River and protecting them for the last two years. He has been following the path of noted mangrove conservationist Kallen Pokkudan. The award is being given in the memory of P V Thampy, a journalist and an environmental activist. The award will be given to Sanoj by Kallen Pokkudan at a function to be held at YMCA Hall at Chittoor Road on Nov 10 at 5 pm. Environmentalist C R Neelakandan will deliver the keynote address while the veteran journalist P Rajan will deliver the P V Thampy commemorative speech. In the last 13 years, people awarded with the P V Thampy award include T N N Bhattathirippad of Thrissur for the protection of river resources, Ithapi of Kottayam for planting trees, Theeram of Kolavi for being active in protecting sea tortoises, Kallen Pokkudan, Puliyankulath Abdul Kareem for planting a forest in 32 acres of land, Vasanthasena of Periyar Tiger Reserve, Neythal of Neeleswaram, Mundan of Pengattiri, Indyanoor Gopi of Palakkad who has been active in the protection of Bharathappuzha and Mariyamma Kurien of Kumarakam.
