Lucknow: Muslim leaders from both Shia and Sunni communities have come together to support AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi for demanding that the government brings in a law to punish people who call Indian Muslims ‘Pakistanis’.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen leader had raised the issue in Parliament on Tuesday and demanded that people held ‘guilty’ of such an offence be punished with a three-year jail term.
Speaking to News18, executive member of All India Muslims Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali said, “Muslims in India are again and again being deliberately associated with Pakistan apart from having to face such baseless allegations that are very heart-wrenching for them.”
He added, “A stringent law is needed in this regard for those who call Muslims ‘Pakistani’ and strict action must be taken against those who question their integrity by associating them with Pakistan.”
Shia leader Ali Hussain’s reaction was also on similar lines, who said, “With such remarks about Indian Muslims, people only try to disturb the peace and harmony of the country. The country belongs to everyone, to Muslims, Hindus and other communities as well. Strict action is needed against people who make such comments and hurt public sentiments.”
Owaisi, while speaking at the Lok Sabha on Tuesday had said, “Bring a law that if any Muslim is called Pakistani, the accused person will face a three-year jail term.” However, he also added that the BJP-led government will not bring such a law.
Owaisi further said that Muslims in India had rejected Mohammad Ali Jinnah's two-nation theory, but were still made to feel like outsiders. The AIMIM leader, who was taking part in the debate in the Lok Sabha on the motion of thanks to the President's Address also said that the triple talaq bill was “anti-women.”
