Oscar radar misses films, characters of note
A few notable films and performances have been ignored by the Academy.

Mumbai: In the race to the Oscars, a few notable films and performances have been ignored by the academy of motion pictures arts and sciences- but have won critical acclaim. Here are some that lost out on the Oscars this year.

If any actor should have been nominated twice in the same category this year, it should have been Kate Winslet.

On the Oscar radar with her performance in The Reader, she missed out on getting one for Revolutionary Road.

Every minute of Winslet's performance as a discontent housewife who longs to break free from her stifling suburban life is Oscar-worthy, but hasn't found a place on the Best Actress list.

Di Caprio's show as the convention-following husband also deserves a Best Actor nomination and the film, directed by Sam Mendes, has also surprisingly been overlooked in the Best Pcture category.

He complements Sean Penn's performance, frame by frame in Milk but James Franco hasn't found the same support on the Oscar list.

Franco plays Scott Smith, Harvey Milk's partner, who stands by him through thick and thin. A most deserving candidate for the Best Supporting Actor award, Franco's performance is remarkable and holds its own in what could have been a one-man show.

She won a Golden Globe but that did not guarantee Sally Hawkins an Oscar nod for Best Actress for her role in Happy Go Lucky.

She is as the title goes, a cheery 30-something school teacher who goes through life with a strictly positive attitude. Hawkins pulls it off without annoying you with false cheer, which is a tough act, and she does it effortlessly, which is definitely Oscar material.

Another film which missed an Oscar for Best Picture is the deceptively simple Wall E. It has been nominated for best Animation Feature among other categories, but it's heartbreaking not to see it vie for best picture. Wall E's soulful quest for love melted many hearts, but not the Oscar panel.

And finally, the film that has won every award this season for the late Heath Ledger. The Christopher Nolan directed Dark Knight takes Batman to a deeper, darker level. Ledger's role as the Joker is destined to be immortal in the history of cinema and this film is easily the best in the Batman franchise. Dark Knight has 8 nominations at the Oscar, but sadly it won't be contesting for best picture.

Wish A R Rahman and Team Slumdog luck for the Oscars
