Bhubaneswar (Orissa): Twelve tribals and a policeman were killed in a clash at the Tata Steel office in Orissa's Jajpur district on Monday.
The tribals were opposing the construction of a boundary wall of the company.
The trouble started when hundreds of armed tribals started protesting against the civil construction being carried out by the Tatas for setting up of a Steel Plant at Kalinga Nagar this morning.
The police initially lobbed teargas shells to disperse the mob but the tribals, armed with bows and arrows, stormed the Tata Steel office compound and attacked policemen.
In the fight that broke out, the tribals hacked a policeman to death. Several others have sustained injuries.
The police resorted to lathi charge and fired tear gas shells, but it had little impact on the tribals.
The policemen then resorted to firing to quell the rampaging mob, killing 12 of the tribal protestors.
