THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is no short-cut to success in sports other than hard work and confidence, Dr Shashi Tharoor has said. He was inaugurating   the Sports Science Centre and ‘Come and Play’ scheme at Lakshmi Bai National College for Physical Education (LNCPE), Kariavattom, on Thursday.The centre is the third of its kind in the country after those set up at National Institute of Sports, Patiala and SAI’s Bangalore centre.Tharoor said the SAI centre at LNCPE Kariavattom is a jewel in the crown of the city. ”Three athletes from Kerala who were trained at SAI have qualified for the London Olympics. This proves the quality of the institute,” he said.He also promised that he would speak to the Union Sports Minister to help procure sophisticated equipment for the centre.Dr G Kishore, SAI Kerala regional director and principal of LNCPE, said that the talents of children should be identified at a tender age so that they can be groomed and introduced at international arenas. “The ‘come and play’ scheme is designed to provide training facility for students who are unwilling to join the residential programme. Science disciplines like Bio-mechanics, Sports Psychology, Sports Medicine, Sports Physiology and Sports Anthropometry set up at the centre would help modernise sports,” he said.Olympian Ashwini Nachappa, Sports and Youth Affairs Director Dr Amith Mallick IFS, M A Vaheed MLA, CRPF Pallipuram DIG Ajay Bharadev and Arjuna Award winner and Regional Director of Lucknow SAI Rachana Govil also addressed the function.
