THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Police have questioned about 40 people in connection with the death of Sister Mary Ancy, a teacher at Holy Cross Lower Primary School, who was found dead on Wednesday in the water tank of the convent where she was staying. The investigating team probing the case said that they were awaiting the forensic report to reach a final conclusion. The police, based on the preliminary postmortem report and on circumstantial evidence, had termed it as a case of ‘conscious drowning’. The investigating team also has ruled out any foul play.Reminiscent of the Sister Abhaya episode, the nun, who hails from Kottayam, went missing from her room where she had gone to sleep on Tuesday night after prayers. Her body was found in the water tank early on Wednesday morning by fellow inmates. The heavy slab covering the tank had been removed fuelling speculation that it was a case of murder. However, police on Wednesday said that the slab could have been dragged by Sister Ancy herself as she had good physique.Local people, had, however raised suspicions about the death as the investigating team was yet to answer as to why Sister Mary opted for a small water tank to end her life when there was a well in the vicinity. Questions are also being raised about how the nun who was well built could manage to get into the water tank the width of which was small.Ancy’s colleagues in the school told police that she was depressed of late after she developed some skin disease. She also complained about lack of sleep and told them that she was under medication. Sister Ancy was teaching in the school for the last 21 years.Police are considering this as the main reason which led to her suicide. In addition to colleagues, inmates and local people, the police also questioned doctors who were treating sister Ancy.
