CHENNAI: The next time you go to a post office, it doesn’t necessarily have to be for sending a letter or for paying your telephone bill. Instead, it can be for buying a wrist watch. Yes, the head post offices at T Nagar, Tambaram, Ambattur and Avadi and Anna Nagar SO post office will hereafter have a variety of HMT wrist watches on display for purchase.In an attempt to diversify the sale of its products, HMT has tied up with selected post offices in the city to sell its wrist watches.“We launched this initiative in Bangalore last year and two months back in Chennai as well as at Anna Salai and GPO branches. Though the response was lukewarm in Bangalore, In Chennai, about 741 watches worth `8 lakh were sold in just two months. So, we decided to extend our plans in Chennai,” said Paulraj, MD, HMT Watches Limited, while launching the facility at the T Nagar Post Office.It is also an attempt to help people to buy original products from a reliable place, he added. Over 50 models of watches ranging from Rs 395 to Rs 3300 will be available and a representative from the company will be present at these post offices for a month to help make the staff familiar with different models and their features. Based on the response, HMT is planning to increase its presence in other post offices as well.MS Ramanujam, Post Master General, Chennai City Region, said, “HMT is a brand that made quality watches affordable for all.” As part of the launch, a lucky draw was held for T Nagar post office staff and three winners were gifted watches.
