Now, disclaimer debate hits Da Vinci
Bad news for those of who were on their way to book tickets for The Da Vinci Code. Sony Pictures, the company releasing the movie in India, has refused to add an extra disclaimer at the beginning of the film calling it a work of fiction and denying any relation to the Christian religion.

New Delhi: Da Vinci Code’s troubles seem far from over. Sony Pictures, the company releasing the Da Vinci Code, has refused to add a disclaimer at the beginning of the film calling it a work of fiction and denying any relation to the Christian religion.

The company says that there is already a disclaimer calling the film a work of fiction.

Christian groups which saw the film along with the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, on Wednesday have asked for an additional disclaimer in the film.

The film was cleared for release with an 'A' certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Thursday and is supposed to hit theatres all over India next week.

CBFC took this decision after taking into account the response of the representatives of the Catholic Church, Dasmunsi said.

"The film will be screened in its original form but there will be a short disclaimer that the storyline of the movie was based on complete fiction. Besides it has been given an 'A' Certificate," Dasmunsi said.

Sony Pictures has said that it appreciates the Board's granting an "A" classification (without asking for any cuts) for the film, in light of the fact that the film already includes a legal card that states that characters and incidents are fictitious, but added that the company does not believe that additional or modified language should be required.

The legal card reads as follows: “The characters and incidents portrayed and the names herein are fictitious, and any similarity to the name, character or history of any person is entirely coincidental and unintentional”.

The movie, a Ron Howard's adaptation of the Dan Brown bestseller, centers on the contention that Jesus and his follower, Mary Magdalene, bore children — a premise that has led senior Vatican officials to call the story offensive and to urge a boycott.
