A boy named Ejazuddin, from the small village of Nazrul Pally in Chanchal, Maldah (West Bengal), is making strides towards realising his dream of playing cricket professionally. His journey began in a humble tin house, where he first developed a passion for cricket, watching Mahendra Singh Dhoni play. From those early dreams, Ejazuddin has navigated numerous challenges to reach significant milestones in his career. Recently, he earned a spot on the Eastern Railway cricket team, marking him as the first from his district to achieve this feat. He is on the shortlist for the under-19 Bengal team. These opportunities have brought joy and pride to his family and the community in Nazrul Pally, especially during a brief return home between trials in Kolkata.
Ejazuddin comes from a poor background as his father Azimuddin works in a vegetable mill, his grandfather is a migrant labourer, and another family member works in a grocery store. Despite these financial constraints, his family supported his early interest in cricket by enrolling him at the Chanchal Cricket Academy, when he was just seven years old. His talent soon caught the attention of his coach, Rajesh Das who has been a constant supporter in his training.
The financial burden of pursuing a sport like cricket was significant, but the unwavering support from his family and coach helped him persevere and succeed. Coach Das expressed pride in Ejazuddin’s achievements, highlighting his humble beginnings and dedication.
This year, Ejazuddin is set to compete for Eastern Railway in the first-division cricket league organised by CAB. Having already made a mark in various district and state-level tournaments, he aims to excel with the Rail and Bengal teams and harbours the ultimate dream of representing his country in cricket. The anticipation of his future success keeps his family and community eagerly watching his progress.
