No tie ups with BJP, clears Omar Abdullah
No tie ups with BJP, clears Omar Abdullah
The BJP won 11 seats through the entire Jammu region.

Jammu: All the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers are very happy as the party has swept through the entire Jammu region getting as many as 11 seats. This is a huge jump from the solitary seat that the BJP managed in 2002.

However, many think that this is a result of the role the party played in Amarnath agitation.

The only option of an alliance the BJP could have looked at was National Conference (NC). But as NC doesn’t seem to be interested in any kind of tie up with the BJP, it seems for the time being the BJP should be happy just being the healthy opposition in Jammu and Kashmir.

“We can never tie up with the BJP,” says NC president Omar Abdullah.

For the BJP incharge of the state (Jammu and Kashmir) Arun Jaitley result will come as a huge relief after the drubbing in Delhi.

Delhi was another state which Jaitley was looking after. The irony is that despite its best performance so far, the party has no suitors even in these coalition times.

But to some observers, there is a dangerous side to the BJP's growth. The Hindu Jammu versus the Kashmiri Muslim divide is well known. In its election manifesto the party had aggressively talked about ending the discrimination meted out to Jammu because of Kashmir.

“The BJP will have a lot to answer to this country. What is the price that we will have to pay as a nation for this victory,” says Editor political Hindustan Times Vinod Sharma.

At the moment, the BJP will look at this as an academic question. But it will be wary of not getting caught in the politics of untouchability that it had suffered from at the centre in the 90s.
