The INTUC will have no other option but to join forces with all trade unions in the country to protect labour rights and even resort to long-drawn stirs to achieve genuine demands, INTUC state president R Chandrasekharan told Express, when asked about the stance of the outfit on the minimum 72-hour-long general strike proposal. “The Union Government is not even ready for consultations or dialogue on various issues related to labour in the country, which has resulted in a turbulent phase in the sector,’’ he said.
“This will be made known to the masses,’’ he replied, when asked whether such long agitations will not be billed as retrograde in the present political and social milieu. “INTUC was one organisation which had supported the economic liberalisation policies in the country in the early nineties. At that time, the then Union Government had assured that labour interests will be protected through amendments to laws for payment of bonus, PF, gratuity, pension, contract labour abolition and regulation and ensuring equal wages for equal work,’’ Chandrasekharan said. ‘’But nothing had happened over the years,’’he said.
“In the case of Foreign Direct Investment also, the professed agreement with MNCs was that they will be legally bound to ensure infrastructure improvements in the area where their establishments are situated. However, the companies had not fulfilled these conditions,” he said.
In this context, the question as to benefits of allowing MNCs to operate has risen. The INTUC is convinced that the so-called MNCs permitted to operate in India in the name of globalisation are not helping in promoting inclusive growth in the country,’’ he said.
