NHRC raps MCD over child cremation
The Commission noticfies the municipal body on the pathetic state of crematoriums for children in the Capital.

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission has sent a notice to the MCD Commissioner, seeking facts on the pathetic state of burial grounds for children who die too young.

CNN-IBN had reported the distressing story of the family of Shantanu Sharma who went to eight crematoriums across the city, to perform the last rites of their fifteen-month-old nephew.

Authorities of crematoriums refused the request, saying children below three years cannot not be cremated since it was against Hindu law

The story also highlighted how the Delhi’s ghats (cremation grounds) for children called bacchewala ghats are no better than garbage dumps.

The NHRC on Monday took suo-motu cognizance of the issue and said if the contents are true, it is a serious violation of human rights.

The Commission has given the MCD a week to submit a report upon any policy or guideline.
