NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission on Friday sought a reply from the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police and Chennai SSP following reports of the alleged death of five persons during a police encounter in Chennai on Wednesday night. The NHRC has also sought a magisterial enquiry report from the Chennai administration within eight weeks.The Commission has also sought a post-mortem report and independent investigation report into the incident as per its own guidelines.The police allegedly killed five persons suspected to be involved in a series of bank burglaries in the city. The police had surrounded a house at Velachery in Chennai where some suspects were lodged. The encounter broke out when those inside the house began firing at the police instead of surrendering. Two inspectors were injured in the incident which occurred on Wednesday midnight.The five persons – four from Bihar and one from West Bengal – were identified with the help of voter ID cards and driving licences recovered from the spot. The deceased are Chandrika Ray, Harish Kumar, Vinay Prasad, Vinod Kumar – all from Bihar and Abhay Kumar from West Bengal.Over the past month two bank robberies had occurred in Chennai. An Indian Overseas Bank branch was robbed of Rs 14 lakh and a Bank of Baroda branch was burgled of Rs 19 lakh. The police had set up 30 special teams to crack the cases.
