NGO offers to reconstruct damaged Burrabazar
An NGO has come up with a proposal to reconstruct damaged buildings.

Kolkata: With the fire that engulfed some buildings in the Burrabazar area on Saturday still raging in the Nandaram Market building, an NGO has come out with a proposal for reconstruction of the damaged buildings and re-distribution of those to the affected traders.

"The government should take over the Nandaram Market, the Kashiram Market and the four premises which comprise the Tripal Patti which are gutted. The damaged buildings must be pulled down and we will reconstruct them," Vice-President of Calcutta Citizens' Initiative (CCI), Narayan Jain said at a press conference.

Stating that the CCI would help reconstruct the damaged buildings, he said the Jain Swetambar Terapanthi Sabha had agreed to provide temporary shelter to the traders on a 6,000 sq ft land owned by them on adjoining Portugese Church Street till the buildings were reconstructed.

The Terapanthi Sabha has also decided to advance soft loans to the affected businessmen and the CCI was preparing a list of such traders for the purpose, Jain said.

He said the Rs 2 crore fund sanctioned by industrialist B K Birla earlier in the day would be distributed to the most needy among the affected traders.

"We are forming a committee with representatives of Birla, the affected traders and the CCI. It will identify the most needy among the traders," he added.
