West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said Kolkata Police Commissioner, Vineet Kumar Goyal, met her and expressed his wish to step down from his post. However, the Chief Minister said, she did not allow Goyal to quit.
“You are saying anything,” Mamata told the media.
“The Police Commissioner has been coming to me saying he wants to resign, but I did not allow him to do so,” she added.
A delegation of junior doctors in Kolkata has been demanding Goyal’s resignation, citing his failure to stop vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 15. The trainee doctor was raped and murdered at the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9.
The Chief Minister also addressed claims of her offering money to the rape victim’s family, and said, “A lot of people are saying I told them about money. I have not said anything about money, neither did I offer money to the victim’s family.”
“The Supreme Court had directed the state government to help the victim’s family, but I did not offer them money. I told them that money cannot be the alternative,” she added.
She also slammed the media and claimed some channels were trying to create unrest over the rape and murder case.
“Some people are trying to increase their TRP, two to three channels are trying to create unrest and are provoking. A lot of lies are being said and I am asking a committee to be formed,” she said, adding, “I have never said that I will not speak, I am ready for talks.”
The Chief Minister also attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying they took out protest rallies in the state without the permission of the police. She also said police personnel were injured, but did not hurt anyone.
Alleging a conspiracy in the case, at the hands of the Centre and the Leftists, Mamata Banerjee said, “You want to take everything from the police, but there is a conspiracy, and the Central government and the Left are involved in this.”
“Hospitals should work more effectively,” Mamata Banerjee said while mentioning the death of 23 patients during the doctors’s strike.
MAMATA BANERJEE SUPPORTING RAPISTS: BJP
As the Chief Minister addressed the media, in a separate press briefing, BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia alleged Mamata Banerjee stood with rapists, instead of supporting the family of the victim.
“The people of West Bengal and the nation have become the defenders of the Constitution. Instead of standing with the family of the victim, she (Mamata Banerjee) is standing with the rapists,” the BJP leader said.
Commenting on the Supreme Court hearing in the case, Bhatia said, “The CJI said there was at least a 14-hour delay to register the FIR. Does Mamata Banerjee still want to continue as the West Bengal Chief Minister? She should resign so that a fair investigation can be conducted.”
“If during the investigation, evidence shows that she was careless and also involved in tampering with the evidence, then her polygraph test should be conducted and her arrest could be imperative to ensure that there is justice,” the BJP leader said.
