New Delhi: Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is likely to be barred from standing in the general elections due to be held in January next year, says Pakistan's Attorney General Malik Qayyum.

Speaking on the DawnNews TV channel on Monday, Qayyum said that Sharif would be barred because he had been sentenced to life imprisonment before he went into exile, in 2000.

The charges relate to Sharif's alleged attempt in October 1999 to stop a plane carrying Pervez Musharraf, the then-Army Chief, from landing in Pakistan.

Sharif, who heads the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz group, is expected to file his nomination papers along with his family in Lahore on Monday afternoon, for January’s general elections.

The PML-N and Benazir Bhutto’s PPP will decide over the next days if they should contest the elections under the banner of APDM – an alliance of Opposition parties.
