NAMAKKAL: A lorry belonging to a person from Namakkal has been allegedly hijacked by highway robbers, who have also abducted the driver and the cleaner, in Madurai on Tuesday.The lorry operators association alleged that the hijacked lorry, owned by Sundarrajan of Namakkal, was engaged in transporting copper plates from the Sterlite company in Thoothikudi. Police have registered an FIR and are investigating.K Nallathampi, president of the State Federation of Lorry Owners Associations-Tamil Nadu (SFLOA-TN), said a group of persons posing as transport department officials intercepted the lorry on Madurai-Tirumangalam bypass road in the guise of checking the documents. While the crew were showing the papers, they bundled them into a car at knife point and took them to far off place. The incident took place early on Tuesday when the lorry was on its way to Maharashtra. “The gang took away the lorry loaded with copper plates worth about `75 lakh. Later, the driver R Manikandan and the helper N Velusamy were released at Meensuruti in Pudukottai district”, Nallathampi said.A case has been registered by the Nagamalai Pudukottai police, based on a complaint lodged by the crew and the lorry owner.
