New Delhi: World number 1 Rafael Nadal and British hope Andy Murray moved into the third round of the Madrid Masters.

Nadal was up against Ernests Gulbis and the Latvian put up a tough fight before going down in three sets.

The first was tied at five-all before Nadal broke Gulbis in the twelfth game and took it 7-5.

Gulbis, though, did recover in the second set taking it 6-4 from the top seed.

Nadal recovered in time to serve out the third set and close the match in two hours and 22 minutes.

"It was a very important match for me. To win against a very difficult player so very happy for the victory. He played very aggressive all the time, for me it was very difficult to get the rhythm of the game," said Nadal.

He will next meet 15th seed Richard Gasquet who beat American Mardy Fish 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 in his second round match.
