New Delhi: There has been a lot of unrest among the Maharashtra Police force over a book written by Ashok Kamte’s widow, Vinita Kamte. Ashok Kamte was one of the policemen who lost his life on 26/11, and his wife’s book now questions the urgency of the police in taking on the terrorists.
In the book, To The Last Bullet Vinita Kamte had questioned why Joint Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria – who took charge of the police control room during 26/11 – had denied knowledge of why Ashok Kamte was sent to the Cama Hospital.
She writes: “Very strange that the Control Room people did not know their location although he had called them and let them know. After the three policemen (Ashok Kamte, Vijay Salaskar and Hemant Karkare) were hurt, the Control Room was told (where they were), but even then the person in charge feigned ignorance.”
Vinita Kamte said that she had received all this information through an RTI that she had filed and she told CNN-IBN that the book had been written by her in complete honesty.
She says that the facts in her book are based on wireless transcripts and blames the government for hiding facts about the injuries her husband and his fellow policemen who were killed sustained.
“I have received all this information through RTI from the Mumbai Police themselves. All allegations are based on information from them. I wouldn’t like to comment on Maria quitting. I have to defend the people who are no more there to defend themselves, so I have written the book,” she stated.
The Mumbai Police never responded to questions we had. I wanted these answers from them. I stand by every word I have written in that book. I have mentioned the names of all those people who shirked their duty that day. We have the government sitting there who doesn’t respond to questions we had. I can’t expect anything,” she added.
“I have wanted the information from the Mumbai Police since January. I have now written to the Ram Pradhan Commission. I know I am dealing with people in power,” she said.
Sources have now said that Maria has threatened to quit if the state government does not clarify the allegations made against him by Vinita Kamte.
Reports also state that he has shot off a letter to Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil and will meet the state Home Minister on Friday.
Meanwhile, Patil has said that Maria cannot simply quit the force.
Top cops Ashok Kamte, Vijay Salaskar and Anti-Terrorism Squad chief Hemant Karkare had died under fire from terrorists during the siege.
Both Kamte’s and Karkare’s wives allege that there are discrepancies in the police’s version of events.
