Mumbai: After a lengthy conversation between themselves, the couple identified the woman as their former domestic help Kajal Ram Raut, who had taken flight after cleaning them out of 4,000 Hong Kong Dollars and several traveller’s cheques among other valuables from their residence at 16th Road, Khar (West) on December 23, 2005. The 38-year-old miscreant was produced in court yesterday and has been sent to judicial custody.
Khar police officers investigating the case said they received a phone call from Vijay at 7pm on July 1, claiming he had spotted a robber who had managed to evade the cops for seven years. A police team was sent to the spot and Kajal was taken into custody. Officers said they had registered a case of theft against the offender in 2005 and had gone to her house in the slums of Gazdar Bandh in Santacruz (West). However, Kajal had managed to give them the slip and had remained untraceable since.
“We had even approached Kajal’s relatives who stay nearby. But we’d failed to locate her,” said an officer from Khar police station. Mangesh Pote, senior inspector from Khar, confirmed the arrest and said, “Kajal has been arrested for theft under section 381 of IPC based on the confession she made at the police station after being brought here.”
Cops are yet to recover any booty. According to the police, since the crime occurred in 2005, the thief may have spent all the money.
