New Delhi: The Mumbai Session Court has stayed the extension of the gag order issued against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray by the Mumbai Police. The stay will continue till 1700 hrs (IST) on Friday.
The state government has said it will move the High Court against the stay order.
The latest order prohibiting him from holding rallies and speaking to the press was served on Raj on February 25.
Raj had challenged the extension of the gag order on Wednesday, saying the extension was illegal.
The police had first passed the order on February 11, after violence broke out in Maharashtra following Raj's comments against North Indians.
When the order lapsed on February 25, the police had extended it to March 3.
The MNS Chief had earlier run a campaign against North Indian migrants to Mumbai. He was blamed for inciting his MNS cadre to attack north Indians in Mumbai.
Attacks on migrants from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh began soon after Raj criticised actor Amitabh Bachchan of being more loyal to his home state Uttar Pradesh.
Raj was later booked under Section 153A of the IPC and charged with promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of place of birth and language and for trying to disturb social harmony.
He was later arrested, but was released on bail hours after his arrest. The court of the metropolitan magistrate in Vikhroli granted him conditional bail after he furnished a bond of Rs 15,000.
The court barred him from speaking to the media or a gathering of more than four people.
