A couple in Mumbai were arrested for the murder of the woman’s 15-month-old child and filing a false kidnapping report with the police. The couple, who were in a live-in relationship, were sent to the police custody till May 28. The accused, identified as 28-year-old Rajesh Rana and 23-year-old Rinki Rana originally hail from Odisha.
According to an India Today report, police said that Rinki came to Mumbai with her toddler about four months ago. The couple, who worked as labourers, lived at a construction site with their son Aman in the city’s Jogeshwari area.
The incident came to light when the couple complained to the police on May 21 that the child had been kidnapped by two men. “He claimed that the two men forced the toddler to inhale something, causing him to fall unconscious, and then escaped in an auto rickshaw,” an officer was quoted by the Indian Express as saying.
However, with the help of CCTV footage, it was revealed in the investigation that the man brutally thrashed the child to death and then the couple dumped the body in a drain near the Aarey Milk Colony.
“We then took him into custody and interrogated him. During questioning, he alleged that while taking his son to play, his son fell and sustained a head injury, resulting in his death. Rana further told us that he got scared and disposed of the body in a nullah at Goregaon,” an officer told the Indian Express.
The police then retrieved the body and conducted a post-mortem on the child. it was revealed in the post-mortem report that the toddler had died due to multiple injuries to his body.
“Rana was questioned again, after which he revealed that Aman(the son) was born from Rinki’s first marriage. The accused had disdain for the boy as such and the couple constantly fought over the child,” an investigator said.
