A large cache of illegal arms, apparently meant for the underworld, was seized from suburban Jogeshwari on Monday.

Mumbai: A large cache of illegal arms, apparently meant for the underworld, was seized from suburban Jogeshwari late on Monday night and one person carrying the consignment was arrested, police said on Tuesday.

The seizure included 14 pistols and revolvers and 35 live cartridges, all made in clandestine armouries in north India, Additional Police Commissioner (Western region), Bipin Bihari said.

"The consignment was meant for splinter groups of the underworld who are still active in city," he said,

Twenty-one-year-old Devraj Shrichandra Singh, a resident of Banda in Uttar Pradesh, who had brought the consignment from his native place, was arrested, the ACP said.

Bihari said police were tipped off about arrival of the consignment and a the police had been checking all vehicles in western suburbs, when Devraj Singh was caught travelling in an autorickshaw with the weapons.

During interrogation, Devraj said he was sent by a person to Mumbai to deliver weapons, and was scheduled to meet the contact at Adarsh Nagar in suburban Andheri that night.

Police kept a close watch on the place where Devraj was scheduled to meet the contact, but no body turned up, the police official said.

Devraj, meanwhile, was produced in a local court and has been remanded to police custody till September 11.

The local contact of Devraj who provided him shelter on arrival of the arms consignment, and the person who dispatched arms from Banda will be under police scanner, Bihari added.
