New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dramatic announcement to scrap the existing denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes may have taken the nation by surprise, but he had given enough clues on what was to come for black money hoarders in his exclusive interview to CNN-News18 in early September.
Replying to a pointed question on if he intended to carry forward his tough line on curbing black money, Modi had urged those with undeclared wealth to take advantage of the disclosure scheme before the deadline of September 30 and return to into the mainstream.
“And no one should blame me if I take tough decisions after the 30th. This money belongs to the country’s poor. No one has the right to loot this. This is my commitment. I am working with full force and will continue the effort," he had said.
“I have said this in public that 30th of September is your last date. You may have made mistakes with whatever intentions. Whether it has been done willingly or unwillingly, here is your chance. Come into the mainstream. I have this plan for people to sleep peacefully at night. People must accept this," he said in the interview.
The “tough decision" the PM forewarned about in that Network18 interview was put into effect on Tuesday night when in a televised address to the nation Modi announced that existing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes would not be valid tender anymore.
