CHENNAI: Despite AIADMK’s clean sweep, the local body poll results offer a silver lining for the DMK as it emerged as the second-largest party, albeit a distant one. But, for DMK chief M Karunanidhi, consolation lies elsewhere. Not waiting for the poll results, Karunanidhi flew to Delhi to see daughter Kanimozhi, who is languishing in Tihar jail after her arrest in April in connection with the 2G spectrum scam. Her bail petition comes up for hearing on Saturday, and if she walks out of jail, it would be the first good news for the DMK chief in a long time. The DMK had hit a low in the Assembly Elections after it was edged out of the position of the principal opposition party by the Vijayakanth-led DMDK. The local body elections, however, proved beyond reasonable doubt that it would take a while before an alternative to the two seasoned Dravidian parties emerged in the political spectrum of Tamil Nadu. The principal opposition party lies at a dismal fifth position in terms of the number of seats won in the local body elections. Even the independents and the Congress party placed third and fourth respectively, winning more seats than the DMDK, a fact that would be difficult for the fledgling party to stomach.
