MHA sets up panel to look into the demand for Bodoland state
The demands for a separate Bodoland grew louder after Parliament approved the creation of Telangana.

New Delhi: Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday set up a committee headed by former home secretary GK Pillai to look into the demands of a separate Bodoland state to be carved out of Assam.

The panel headed by the former home secretary will submit its report in nine months.

The demands for a separate Bodoland grew louder after Parliament approved the creation of Telangana.

Bodoland Territorial Council was formed in 2003 after many years of agitation. BLTF rebels surrendered their arms in 2003.

It was formed under the Amended Provisions of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Main Groups asking for Bodoland now are - ABSU ( All Bodo Students Union), UDPF ( United Democractic Progressive Front), BPPF ( Bodoland People's Progressive Front), PJACBM ( People's Joint Action Committee for Bodoland Movement) and NDFB-P (National Democratic Front of Bodoland-progressive).

Meanwhile, several families affected in the ethnic clashes in the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) in 2012 are yet to be rehabilitated. The Assam government has also admitted that over 1,300 families, who were affected during the ethnic clashes in BTAD were yet to be rehabilitated.

Assam has been divided thrice since Independence with Nagaland carved out in 1963, Meghalaya with the passing of North Eastern (Reorganisation Areas) Act in 1971 and Mizoram, which first became a Union Territory in 1971 and was later made a state in 1985.
