THRISSUR: The ongoing indefinite hunger strike against the toll collection at Paliakkara in Thrissur, by the Toll Virudha Samyukta Samara Samiti, got a fillip on Sunday with the renowned anti-dam activist, Medha Patkar, paying a visit to the fasting venue.Giving full support to the strike, she said there is a clear conspiracy between the Centre, the state and the corporate lobby to suppress the people’s anger on this issue. She alleged that kickbacks in the deal had prompted Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to go back on his promise that the service roads would be free for the motorists. Stating that the conspiracy was not restricted to Kerala, Patkar said the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is a classic example of this unholy nexus. Even after accumulating toll money much higher than the claimed construction cost, the firms are fleecing the public using them, across the country. She visited the venue in the evening, along with a number of social activists and people’s representatives, and spent time with the fasting leaders. Ajithan, a fasting leader, ended his fast with glass of water, offered to him by Patkar, while another leader, T L Santhosh, began his fast in her presence.
