CHENNAI : Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday gave a thumbs down to the three-year rule of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre.When the media asked her to rate the performance of the UPA government which celebrated its three years in office on May 22, Jayalalithaa said “the average citizen sees that there is no government at the Centre. The country is in a state of drift. It is almost as if there is no government at the Centre.” “I can’t speculate,” Jayalalithaa said when asked whether she was seeing early Lok Sabha polls ahead of 2014.The CM was answering media queries at the Secretariat. Asked whether she had hopes that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the BJP would support former LS Speaker PA Sangma in the Presidential elections, Jayalalithaa said : I can’t make any comment on that... I have made a request to certain political parties and certain political leaders whom I know well to give their support to Sangma and you know the facts.”When a scribe recalled the decision of Sangma’s own party NCP’s decision not to support him in the Presidential polls, the CM said: “I have no further comments to make on that matter. I prefer to wait and watch the developments.”Jayalalithaa and her Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik, on May 17, had proposed Sangma as the candidate for Presidential elections. Jayalalithaa has spoken to leaders of various political parties including the BJP, CPI, CPM Shiromani Akali Dal, TDP and Samajwadi Party urging them to extend their support to Sangma.
