Arjun Meena, the main accused in the alleged forcible cutting of the hair of a Sikh youth was arrested in Delhi.

Jaipur: Arjun Meena, the main accused in the alleged forcible cutting of the hair of a Sikh youth here, was arrested from the domestic airport in Delhi on Thursday.

Meena was arrested by a team of Rajasthan police led Superintendent of Police, Narendra Meena.

He has been brought to the city and is currently being interrogated, informed home minister Gulab Chand Kataria.

The alleged cutting of the hair of 17-year-old Inderpreet Singh sparked protests by the members of the community, who went on a rampage here on Tuesday, brandishing swords and injuring two policemen in brick-batting.

Members of the community also staged violent protests and enforced shutdowns in several towns of Punjab and elsewhere on Wednesday even as action was taken against two policemen for negligence in handling the incident.

Inderprit says Meena, whom he could identify, along with other friends used to stand outside their school and tease girls, against which he protested. Meena suspected that Inderprit was instigating his girlfriend, a student of the same school, against him.

The arrest has relatively brought down tempers and pacified the Sikh community here, which was agitated as hair chopping is considered to be the highest insult to their religion.

Gurmeet Singh, secretary, Sikh Samaj said: "We are satisfied that the government has listened to our pleas and has taken prompt action. We also thank all the other communities Brahman samaj, Jains and others who stood by us in this crisis."

"The episode was not just against one community but totally against Indian culture and traditions, which should be condemned at all levels."

The turban tying ceremony (dastarbandi) of Inderprit was performed on Wednesday evening by SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar.
