Kolkata: With Durga Puja festivities slated to begin from October 10, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday asked the police to keep a strict vigil so that there is no disruption of law and order.
"During the Sarod Utsav (Pujas), I have asked the administration to keep a close watch and take steps against forcible collection of subscription. Like the past two years, the Traffic Police should ensure that people could visit the puja pandals without trouble," Banerjee wrote in the puja number of "Ma, Mati, Manush", a Bengali weekly magazine.
She said police would keep a vigil so that no miscreant could hamper the amity during the Pujas and the upcoming Eid-ul-Zuha festival.
"Our ministers, MLAs, councillors and members of zilla parishad, panchayat samity and gram panchayat would also have to keep a watch on this," she said.
Urging Trinamool Congress workers to remain involved with the festivities, she said, "This is good because it gives an opportunity to interact with lakhs of people."
"I know our party workers have spent sleepless nights with the artists, preparing the idols and also decorating attractive mandaps (Puja pandal)," she said, adding "I will tell the organisers to keep in mind the time limit and decibel while using loudspeakers."
Banerjee, who was flooded with invites from hundreds of organisers had been inaugurating a large number of Pujas including some patronised by ministers of her government.
In order to accommodate many of those Puja organisers' requests, Banerjee has brought forward the inauguration schedule by three days - starting as early as October 5 instead of Chaturthi, which is on Tuesday and would continue till Wednesday.
At many Puja pandals she enthralled the crowd singing songs of Tagore and uttering hymns.
Due to inclement weather prevailing in the past few days, the Chief Minister wished good weather during the Puja days while inaugurating a Puja at Kiddepore in the western part of the city on Tuesday.
