In a move that could fuel fresh round of power fight in the ruling BJP, Excise Minister MP Renukacharya on Thursday said that the party high command should make former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa the state BJP president if it wanted to return to power again.
“Yeddyurappa is indispensable to the state BJP. Unless we face next elections under his leadership it will be difficult to return to power,” Renukacharya told reporters.
However, he clarified that this was people’s opinion and not his.“Yeddyurappa may be facing several charges. But his popularity has not diminished. In fact, it has doubled in the last one year,” he claimed.
When asked what if party high command had approved his demand, Renukacharya said that he was an eternal optimist and the party high command was aware of Yeddyurappa’s ability. When his attention was drawn towards the demand of a few MLAs to make former chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda as the state president, Renukacharya said,”We have nothing against Gowda. But we want the party to respect people’s opinion.”
He, however,criticised Gowda rather indirectly by stating that there existed no BJP government in the last 11 months (when Gowda was the CM).
