CHENNAI: It is the special fortnight of the year for propitiating one’s departed ancestors. It usually spans for 15 days (during waning phase of the moon) in September and October. This year it is going to occur from September 13 to 27, culminating in Mahalaya Amavasya (new moon) on September 27. You will require black sesame seeds, rice, sacred darbha grass and water to perform Tarpanam. Donating food, clothes, shoes and umbrella to the poor and needy is said to bring blessings of the ancestors. Tarpanam should be done on all days during the Mahalaya Paksha, especially during the last day — Mahalaya new moon (September 27). This ritual is to be performed between sunrise and sunset. The process of offering: First, place a tablespoon of black sesame seeds, rice, a coin and a few small pieces of Darbha grass onto the palm of your right hand. Second, take a glass of water and sprinkle a few drops over the offerings. Third, prayer to your ancestors while you pour water over your hand and say, “I invite you to take this offering, six generations of ancestors on my mother’s side and six generations of ancestors on my father’s side. Take this energy. Be healed, be at peace, cross into the light, and kindly bless me.” Finally, pour the remaining water over your right hand and let the offerings wash off completely. You may rinse the coin. www.astroved.com.
